Forget tea (forever), soda, or even bottled water—coffee reigns supreme! According to the latest National Coffee Association (NCA) report, 66% of U.S. adults sipping anything other than tap water within the past day reached first for coffee, edging out bottled water at 64%. Tea, soda, and juice trail far behind, making java America's top beverage choice.
Specialty coffee is the superstar behind this buzz-worthy boost. While traditional coffee held steady (42%), specialty coffee consumption soared to an impressive 46% in 2025, up from 39% just five years ago. Clearly, Americans are becoming coffee snobs—and we’re totally here for it.
Home brewing is hotter than ever, with 71% of coffee drinkers crafting their cups at home, up significantly from 63% in 2020. Meanwhile, enjoying coffee on the go has seen a slight dip, reflecting a cozy, stay-at-home vibe that's stuck around post-pandemic.
Online coffee shopping is also grinding ahead, doubling from 7% to 14% over five years, although grocery stores remain the top coffee source. And as for how we're brewing? The trusty drip machine remains king of the kitchen countertop, with single-cup brewers and even instant coffee (yes, instant!) gaining ground. French presses, however, are slightly falling out of favor.
Bottom line? America is all in on coffee, especially when it comes to specialty and home brewing. Whether you're a pour-over perfectionist, drip devotee, or instant enthusiast (no judgment), it's clear: our cups runneth over with caffeinated passion!
