JUST THE TRIPS

Tijuana Coffee Roaster: First Hand Tasting

I spent the first part of last week in Tijuana—it was my first time! Calm down, it was 100% work-related, and my travel guide was actually a classically trained TJ stunt driver. They were kind enough to maneuver these TJ streets to a few different coffee roasters until we found one that:
A) had coffee and a functioning espresso machine, and
B) was actually open for business.

Visiting local roasters is a must whenever you travel. Everyone walks around with tiny computers in their pockets—you're probably reading this on yours right now. A quick search for "local coffee roaster near me" will guide you straight to caffeine happiness. Do yourself a favor and grab a black coffee—you’ll thank me later.

We stopped by Ilustre Specialty Coffees, and they definitely did not disappoint. The aromas were out-of-this-world amazing, and the flavors were even better. For more pictures and details, click here.

WHERE’S THE ROBUSTA

Indonesia May Soon Import Some New Drip

Every time I’m in the kitchen, you’re in the kitchen…Drinking up ALL THE COFFEE!

Indonesia, the world's fourth-largest coffee producer, is grappling with a brewing crisis: its domestic coffee consumption is outpacing production. Factors such as high costs for fertilizers and seeds, an aging workforce, and climate change have led to a significant drop in coffee yields. In fact, the country's coffee output fell by 24% during the 2023-24 period due to adverse weather conditions. Farmers like Wedya Julianti from East Java's Kawisari plantation, who previously exported much of their harvest, now find themselves catering almost entirely to the local market.

This shift underscores a broader trend: Indonesia's coffee production per hectare is only a quarter of that of neighboring Vietnam. Without substantial government support for research and access to affordable fertilizers, many Indonesian coffee farmers may not survive, further threatening the country's coffee productivity. If these challenges persist, Indonesia may face the ironic situation of having to import coffee to meet its domestic demand, despite its status as a major coffee producer.

Fellow: Espresso Series 1

Fellow has claimed a fair share of my hard-earned cash over the years—mostly in the form of cups and travel mugs. And speaking of travel mugs, steer clear of the Carter Slide Mug. Sure, it’ll keep your coffee piping hot, but it'll also happily decorate your shirt with coffee drips right before you walk into the office. The design is fantastic, but I own four of these, and every single one leaks. Even the replacement they sent leaked! Everything else I've purchased from them has worked as advertised, thankfully.

Now, this isn't a paid ad—but hey, it certainly could become one if Fellow wants to toss us a sample to test (and definitely keep). Their recent rollout was impressively handled, complete with plenty of usage videos alongside the launch. Pricing starts at $1,499 $1,199, with the cheaper option appearing to be pre-order pricing—expect to pay extra if you're looking to add some color options. I'd gladly take one for a spin for a month.

At this price point, this espresso machine surprisingly lacks a double boiler, meaning you typically can't pull espresso shots and steam that silky milk simultaneously. However, Fellow claims in one of their videos that this is still achievable through their advanced "Boosted Boiler" technology. If you pre-order please drop us a email or tag us in your bragging post to give us all coffee envy.

BRAIN HEALTH

6,001 Adults Can’t Be Wrong…

Well…they could be, but in this case they studied 6K+ adults and the protective effects of coffee against dementia. How great is this, we finally get to consume something we love and it has a healthy outcome. If they determine cigars can give you six-pack abs then I’m gonna be so ripped.

A recent study involving 6,001 adults has reaffirmed coffee's protective effects against dementia. The research found that coffee drinkers had 38% lower risk for developing dementia compared to non-coffee drinkers. This suggests that regular coffee consumption, 2 cups a day, may be associated with a lower likelihood of developing dementia.

These findings add to a growing body of evidence supporting the cognitive benefits of coffee. While the exact mechanisms remain under investigation, components in coffee such as caffeine and antioxidants are believed to contribute to its neuroprotective properties. However, it's important to note that coffee consumption should be part of an overall healthy lifestyle, and individuals should consult healthcare professionals regarding their specific health needs.
